Gender and Education

Gender is one aspect of an individual’s identity, much like race or class, it informs how we understand ourselves as individuals, and in relation to those around us.

Research looking into gender and education can span from issues of academic achievement, to social skills. It is critical to ask questions that include gender, not to essentialize or separate students, but to better understand how young people can receive an education that takes all of their needs into account, including those impacted by gender.

Up until recently, most scholarship concerning gender and education focused solely on boys and girls. Great strides made by transgender and gender nonconforming youth alongside advocates to broaden educators’ understanding of gender, which is something we intend to take into account with our work.
